Smithsonite

Wikipedia says: Smithsonite, or zinc spar, is zinc carbonate (ZnCO3), a mineral ore of zinc. Historically, smithsonite was identified with hemimorphite before it was realised that they were two distinct minerals. The two minerals are very similar in appearance and the term calamine has been used for both, leading to some confusion. The distinct mineral smithsonite was named in 1832 by François Sulpice Beudant in honor of English chemist and mineralogist, James Smithson (c.1765-1829), whose bequest established the Smithsonian Institution and who first identified the mineral in 1802.

Smithsonite is a variably colored trigonal mineral which only rarely is found in well formed crystals. The typical habit is as earthy botryoidal masses. It has a Mohs hardness of 4.5 and a specific gravity of 4.4 to 4.5.

Smithsonite occurs as a secondary mineral in the weathering or oxidation zone of zinc-bearing ore deposits. It sometimes occurs as replacement bodies in carbonate rocks and as such may constitute zinc ore. It commonly occurs in association with hemimorphite, willemite, hydrozincite, cerussite, malachite, azurite, aurichalcite and anglesite. It forms two limited solid solution series, with substitution of manganese leading to rhodochrosite, and with iron, leading to siderite.

Physically Smithsonite regulates the activities of the kidneys and the bladder and thereby the balance of liquids, hormones, acid/alkali and mineral-forming elements. It activates elimination and the movement of body fluids, enhances the effect of insulin and helps with diabetes, supports the immune system and promotes production of growth hormones and sex hormones. The function of the male sexual organs (formation of the seminal vesicles) is stimulated; prostate disorders and problems with the ovaries are improved. Smithsonite also regulates the development of the brain and sensory perception. It is extremely important for the retina (especially for vision in bad light) as well as for the senses of taste and smell. It encourages regeneration and healing of wounds, bone formation and the toughening of the outer layer of skin, hair and nails. Smithsonite protects the organism against harmful substances and radiation. It boosts the supplies energy in all cells, tissues and organs, there by regulating weight. A Smithsonite elixir can be applied directly on the skin for treating rashes, dermatitis, shingles, eczema, psoriasis and acne.

Psychologically and mentally Smithsonite promotes the development of intelligence (abstract thinking). It helps with exhaustion, weakness, loss of courage and fearfulness, restlessness, lack of concentration and sleep disturbance, particularly with difficulties sleeping because there are too many ideas and thoughts running through the mind. Smithsonite supplies vitality and alertness, promotes creativity and the desire to turn ideas into reality. It mobilizes states of mood that have become rigid or frozen and provides the possibility for change while encouraging spontaneity, intuition, openness and honesty. Smithsonite helps us to overcome fear and take courage. It promotes our ability to form partnerships and assists us in expressing compassion, support and kindness.

Spiritually Smithsonite initiates great changes in life. It breaks up outworn structures and helps us use these upheavals in a meaningful way for creating better circumstances in our life. It brings idealism and intensifies our lives. Smithsonite encourages the ability to communicate. It promotes joy in living and the ability to be creatively active. Smithsonite ensures survival in the sense of continuous further development towards optimal conditions. It allows us to experience and express the Universal Love energy. Smithsonite also encourages communication with angelic entities and guides and it is a useful tool for psychic development, especially in the field of channelling.

Smithsonite is used in the Chakra Essence for the Heart Chakra.

The Throat Chakra may be understood as relating to communication and growth through expression. This Chakra is paralleled to the thyroid gland, also in the throat and which produces thyroid hormone, responsible for growth and maturation. Physically, the Throat Chakra governs communication, emotionally it governs independence, mentally it governs fluent thought, and spiritually, it governs a sense of security.
